Cotton items, for example, typically tolerate the elevated heat used during such cycles. However, garments containing elastic, spandex, wool, or other heat-sensitive materials require caution. Use the Dryer
For items unsuitable for hot water washing yet capable of withstanding high heat, a dryer with a "steam sanitary" cycle may provide a suitable solution. This approach can work well for articles such as plush toys or certain pillows, though down-filled products are generally not recommended for this treatment.
Add a Laundry Sanitizer
If the washing machine lacks a sanitize cycle, or if the garments are not heat-tolerant, using a commercial laundry sanitizer provides an effective alternative. Although bleach has traditionally been the standard for sanitizing bleach-safe whites, specially formulated laundry sanitizers are available to treat items that cannot be processed with chlorine bleach.
